Getting to Newport Beach
One of the best things about Newport Beach is how easy it is to get there.
The closest airport is John Wayne Airport (SNA), located just 10 to 15 minutes from most Newport Beach hotels. It's served by Southwest, American, Delta, United, Alaska, and several other major airlines, making it the easiest airport for your trip.
Other nearby airports include:
Los Angeles International (LAX) about 45 to 90 minutes away
Long Beach Airport (LGB) about 35 minutes away
Ontario International (ONT) about 1 hour away
No ferry is needed to reach Newport Beach, but while you're there, don't miss riding the historic Balboa Island Ferry, a local tradition that has been transporting visitors across the harbor for more than 100 years.

Best Time of Year for Whale Watching in Newport Beach
One of the best things about Newport Beach is that whale and dolphin watching is a year-round experience. While dolphins can be seen almost every day, the type of whales you'll encounter depends on when you visit.
Winter (December through February)
Winter is the prime season for gray whale migration. Thousands of gray whales travel south from Alaska to the warm waters of Baja California, making Newport Beach one of the best places to watch this incredible journey.
Along with gray whales, it's common to spot pods of playful dolphins cruising alongside the boats.
