You don't need an entire week off work to have an incredible beach vacation.
Sometimes you just need a Friday flight, two nights away and a late flight home on Sunday.
And Hilton Head Island might be one of the best places in the South to do exactly that.
Think wide sandy beaches you can actually ride a bike on, massive live oak trees dripping with Spanish moss, dolphins swimming through Low-country waterways, waterfront seafood restaurants and more than 60 miles of pathways connecting much of the island.
The best part?
Once you arrive, you don't have to spend your entire weekend driving.
We've planned this itinerary specifically as a 3 day weekend, so we're not going to send you running to Savannah, Beaufort and every nearby island just because they're there.
We're choosing the experiences that give you the best taste of Hilton Head without coming home needing a vacation from your vacation.
Here's exactly how we'd spend a weekend on Hilton Head Island.
Why Hilton Head Is Perfect for a 3 Day Weekend
Hilton Head checks so many boxes for a quick getaway.
Beautiful beaches? Yes.
Great restaurants? Absolutely.
Boating and sailing? You know we're in.
Add incredible bike paths, dolphins, Lowcountry scenery and plenty of places to stay at different price points, and you have everything you need for a great weekend without ever leaving the island.
Getting to Hilton Head Island
There are two main airport options.
Hilton Head Island Airport
Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH) is located directly on the island.
For a three day weekend, this would be our first choice whenever the flight schedule and price make sense.
When you only have three days, less transportation means more vacation.
Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport
Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) generally offers more flight options and is approximately 45 miles from Hilton Head Island.
SALTLIFE TIP:
Don't compare airfare alone.
Compare total travel time.
Saving a little money isn't much of a bargain if getting to your destination eats up half of Friday.
DAY 1: FRIDAY
Arrive, Rent Bikes and Head to the Beach
Once you've checked into your hotel or rental, resist the temptation to immediately start checking attractions off your list.
You're on an island.
Go find the ocean.
Rent Bikes
One of the things that makes Hilton Head different from other beach destinations is just how bike friendly it is. There are more than 60 miles of pathways around the island, and when the tide is right, you can even ride along the hard packed sand. We'd rent bikes for the weekend instead of just an hour. You'll have another way to explore without constantly getting back into the car.
Coligny Beach Park
Make your first stop Coligny Beach Park.
Walk the beach, ride your bikes and spend a couple of hours doing absolutely nothing productive.
That's exactly how Friday afternoon on a three day weekend should feel.
Dinner at Hudson's Seafood House on the Docks
Your first Hilton Head dinner needs two things:
Seafood and a sunset.
Hudson's gives you both.
This longtime Hilton Head restaurant sits directly on Port Royal Sound and is one of the island's classic waterfront dining experiences.
Try to time dinner around sunset and ask for outdoor seating if available.
DAY 2: SATURDAY
Saturday is our big Hilton Head day.
We're combining one of the island's most recognizable places with one of our favorite things to do whenever we're somewhere tropical or coastal:
Get out on the water.
Breakfast at Palmetto Bay SunRise Cafe
Start your morning at Palmetto Bay SunRise Cafe overlooking Palmetto Bay Marina.
It's a longtime Hilton Head breakfast favorite and a great place to fuel up before a full day.
Explore Harbour Town
Next we're heading into Sea Pines.
Spend the morning walking around Harbour Town Marina, browsing the shops and enjoying the waterfront.
IMPORTANT: Sea Pines is a gated community. If you aren't staying inside Sea Pines, check the current visitor access requirements and vehicle fee before arriving.
Climb the Harbour Town Lighthouse
You can't come all the way to Hilton Head and skip its most recognizable landmark.
The red and white striped Harbour Town Lighthouse overlooks the marina and Calibogue Sound.
There are 114 steps to the top.
We're climbing them.
The views are worth it.
Lunch at The Quarterdeck
This is exactly how we like to plan a short trip.
The Quarterdeck is right beside the lighthouse, so you don't have to get back into the car and drive somewhere else just to eat lunch.
Grab lunch overlooking Calibogue Sound before heading out for our favorite part of Saturday.
Sail on an America's Cup Yacht
If you've followed us for a while, you already know this about us:
We LOVE getting out on the water when we travel.
Give us a catamaran, sailboat or sunset cruise and we're probably booking it.
So when we found out you can actually sail aboard a former America's Cup racing yacht in Hilton Head, this immediately moved up our list.
The America's Cup Afternoon Sail is approximately 90 minutes and takes you sailing through the waters surrounding Hilton Head.
This isn't just a sightseeing boat ride. You're sailing aboard a yacht with actual America's Cup racing history.And with a three day weekend, we especially love that it's short enough to give you an incredible experience without eating up your entire day.

And you know we're never going to talk you out of a catamaran. 😂
This would be our alternative if you'd rather have a more relaxed sailing experience.
BOOK THE HILTON HEAD CATAMARAN SAIL:
Dinner at The Sage Room
After sailing, clean up and head to The Sage Room for Saturday night dinner.
This is our splurge meal of the weekend. The open kitchen is part of what makes the experience special. If available, try to reserve seating where you can watch the chefs prepare dinner.

DAY 3: SUNDAY
Sunday is intentionally slower.
You've already biked the beach, explored Harbour Town and gone sailing.
Now we're seeing a different side of Hilton Head.
Breakfast at Watusi Cafe
Start with breakfast and coffee at Watusi Cafe near Coligny.
It's popular, so we'd go early rather than spending our last morning waiting for a table.
Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn
Next head to the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn.
Don't picture a traditional museum where you're spending your last vacation morning wandering around indoors.Honey Horn covers approximately 70 acres filled with live oaks, salt marsh views, walking trails and historic buildings.It's one of the best places to learn about the natural environment, history and Lowcountry culture behind the island you've been enjoying all weekend.
Lunch at Fishcamp on Broad Creek
Finish the weekend beside the water. Fishcamp sits along Broad Creek and serves seafood and Lowcountry inspired dishes in a relaxed waterfront setting. Grab an outdoor table if the weather cooperates. One last seafood lunch before heading home sounds about right to us.
Book an Evening Flight
Whenever possible, book an evening flight home.
We're big believers in squeezing every possible hour out of a three day weekend.
An early Sunday flight basically turns your three day getaway into a two day trip.
WHERE TO STAY ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND
For a three day weekend, location matters.
Saving a little money isn't necessarily worth staying somewhere that has you constantly driving back and forth across the island.
Hotel prices also change significantly depending on the season, so always compare rates for your actual dates.
VALUE PICK
Holiday Inn Express Hilton Head Island
This is a good place to start if keeping the hotel budget under control is your priority while still staying convenient to the Coligny area.
Best for: Travelers who care more about location and value than having a full beachfront resort.

Beach House Hilton Head Island
The biggest selling point here is location.
Beach House sits directly on Coligny Beach and puts you close to restaurants, shops and the beach. That's incredibly valuable when you only have a weekend.
Pay attention to resort fees and other charges when comparing rates so you're looking at the actual total price.
Best for: Couples and families wanting beachfront access and a fun vacation atmosphere.

Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort
The Omni is located directly on the beach inside Palmetto Dunes and offers multiple pools, spacious accommodations and the amenities you'd expect from a larger resort.
Best for: Families and travelers who want to spend part of the weekend simply enjoying their resort.

The Inn & Club at Harbour Town
If this is an anniversary or couples weekend and you want to splurge, look at The Inn & Club at Harbour Town.
You'll be inside Sea Pines with convenient access to Harbour Town while getting a smaller and more upscale hotel experience.
This would be our couples splurge.

HILTON HEAD TRAVEL TIPS
Rent bikes. Biking isn't just transportation here. It's part of the Hilton Head experience.
Check the tides. Low tide creates firmer sand and better conditions for riding bikes along the beach.
Stay somewhere convenient. You only have three days. Don't spend them commuting.
Check Sea Pines access before going. Harbour Town and several popular attractions are inside the gated Sea Pines community.
Make dinner reservations. Especially for popular restaurants and Saturday night at The Sage Room.
Book your sailing or dolphin tour ahead of time. The departure that works perfectly with your itinerary may not be available if you wait until you arrive.
Leave room to do nothing. You're still on vacation.
IS THREE DAYS ENOUGH FOR HILTON HEAD?
Absolutely.
Three days gives you enough time to bike the beach, explore Harbour Town, get out on the water, experience some Lowcountry history and eat some fantastic seafood.
Would we happily stay longer?
Obviously.
But that's not the point of this series.
We want to show you that travel doesn't always require seven days of PTO, months of planning or an enormous vacation budget.
Sometimes you just need a really good weekend.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Hilton Head is exactly what we're looking for in our 3 Day Weekend Series.
It's easy to reach, easy to explore and has enough to do without making you feel like you need to race around the island checking things off a list.
Ride your bike down the beach.
Climb the lighthouse.
Go sailing.
Eat seafood beside the water.
And spend at least a little time doing absolutely nothing.
That's a pretty great weekend in our book.
