We have been going to St. John since our honeymoon in 1998. It is one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean but figuring out where to stay can feel overwhelming. The island doesn’t have large resorts like many destinations, and most visitors stay in private villas, boutique hotels, or vacation rentals scattered throughout the hills and bays.

The island is split between two main areas, Cruz Bay and Coral Bay, and each offers a very different experience.

Cruz Bay is where most travelers begin their St. John adventure. It’s the main ferry port from St. Thomas and the island’s central hub for restaurants, shops, grocery stores, and nightlife. If you want to be able to walk to dinner, grab coffee in the morning, and have easy access to tours and taxis, Cruz Bay is usually the most convenient place to stay.

Coral Bay, on the other hand, feels like stepping back in time. Located on the quieter eastern side of the island, it’s less developed, more spread out, and known for its laid-back island pace. You won’t find nearly as many restaurants or shops here, but you will find peaceful views, secluded villas, and a more local, off-the-grid feel.

Think of it this way: Cruz Bay is the social side of St. John, while Coral Bay is the quiet side.

Many first-time visitors choose Cruz Bay for convenience and explore the rest of the island from there. Others fall in love with the slower rhythm of Coral Bay and prefer waking up to sunrise views and spending their days surrounded by nature.

The good news is that St. John offers incredible places to stay in both areas, whether you’re looking for a budget friendly guesthouse, a comfortable condo, or a luxury villa overlooking the Caribbean.

After researching and exploring St. John for years, here are some of the best places to stay on the island for every budget. The good news is that St. John has amazing places to stay for every type of traveler.
