Must Do Experiences in St. John, USVI

St. John is not your average Caribbean island, and honestly, it is not just a destination to us. It is the place where our story began. Back in 1998, Monty and I stepped off that ferry into Cruz Bay for the very first time on our honeymoon, and something about this island just got us. The turquoise water, the lush national park hills rolling down to the shore, the unhurried pace of life, the way the whole place feels like it was tucked away and protected from the rest of the world on purpose. Over two-thirds of St. John is preserved as Virgin Islands National Park, which means the beaches are pristine, the trails are stunning, and the crowds that swallow up other Caribbean islands simply do not exist here the same way. We have been back more times than we can count, and every single time we step off that ferry, we feel it again. That exhale. That feeling of coming home. If you have never been to St. John, we are genuinely excited for you, because you are about to fall in love with a place that will have you planning your next trip before you even leave. And if you have been before, you already know exactly what we mean.
Spend a Morning at Trunk Bay Beach
If there is one beach that belongs on your non-negotiable list, it is Trunk Bay. Consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world, Trunk Bay delivers on every expectation. Soft white sand, calm turquoise water, and an underwater snorkeling trail that even beginners can navigate with ease. Entry is only about $5 per adult and restrooms, showers, and rentals are all on site. Do yourself a favor and get there early before the parking fills up, and do not skip the overlook on your way in. That view alone is worth the trip.

Chase Sea Turtles at Maho Bay
Maho Bay is one of the best places in the entire Caribbean to swim alongside wild sea turtles, and it is completely free to visit. The water is calm, shallow, and crystal clear, making it ideal for families with young kids, snorkelers of any level, or anyone who just wants to plant themselves somewhere beautiful and not move for a few hours. Look for darker patches near the seagrass beds as that is where the turtles tend to feed. Go slow, stay calm, and let them come to you. It is one of those experiences that genuinely stops you in your tracks.
But Maho Bay is more than just turtles. The Maho Crossroads food trucks are set up right at the beach entrance and are one of the most popular lunch stops on the island. You will find options ranging from fresh tacos and bowls to cold drinks and local bites. Grab your food, walk down to the water, and eat with a sea turtle floating past you. That is just a normal Tuesday at Maho.
The beach itself is wide and welcoming with plenty of room to spread out, which is rare on an island this small. There is free parking nearby, though it fills up fast, so arriving before 10am makes a big difference. Plan to spend at least half a day here. Most people who stop in for an hour end up staying until the afternoon without even realizing it, and that is exactly the kind of day St. John is meant for.
Be Your Own Captain with Wharfside Watersports
One of our favorite ways to experience St. John is from the water, on your own schedule, with no one telling you where to go or how long to stay. Wharfside Watersports is located right in Cruz Bay and offers three different boat rental options that let you do exactly that. We have used them personally and trust them completely, and if island independence is your thing, this is how you do it.
The Dinghy Rental (LINK HERE) is the most approachable option and a great choice for exploring the calm bays and coves close to Cruz Bay at a relaxed pace.
The Zodiac Rental (LINK HERE) gives you a bit more power and versatility, ideal for covering more of the coastline and reaching some of the hidden spots along the North Shore that most visitors never see. And if you really want to cover ground and feel the freedom of open water.
The Medline Rental (LINK HERE) Explore the Virgin Islands in our new Medline 9, a spacious and powerful boat with twin 300hp Yamaha Outboards, perfect for bringing more friends along and cruising faster to your next adventure.
Please note that all rentals require prior boating experience. This is not a tour and there is no captain on board, so you will want to be comfortable behind the wheel before booking. If you have that experience, renting a boat here is honestly one of the most memorable things you can do on St. John. There is something about pulling up to a deserted beach, dropping anchor, and having it completely to yourself that no guided tour can replicate.

Snorkel Waterlemon Cay
For the adventurous snorkelers in the group, Waterlemon Cay near Leinster Bay is the crown jewel of St. John snorkeling. To get there, park near Annaberg and take the flat, shaded trail out to Leinster Bay, then keep walking until you reach the cay. The walk is easy and beautiful the whole way. The snorkeling is more advanced than Trunk Bay but absolutely worth it, with coral reefs, colorful fish, rays, and turtles all waiting beneath the surface. Snorkel the right side of the cay for the best visibility.
Take a Day Trip to the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands
Make a day trip to Jost Van Dyke from St. John that maximizes your time, combining several activities in one excursion. Enjoy a light continental breakfast during the cruise, go for a morning snorkel near the coral reefs surrounding the island, and relax at White Bay beach near the famous Soggy Dollar Bar with a full open bar available on the return cruise.
Choose how you spend your time in Jost Van Dyke, from relaxing to swimming
Enjoy a full open bar during happy hour on the cruise back to St. John
Take photos of the North Shore of St. John from the water
Stay entertained on board with games, hammocks, and other activities
Half or Full-Day Private Boat Charter from St. John
Depart on your private island‑hopping adventure with Bonus Time Charters aboard one of our 29' or 32' Power Catamaran and explore the very best of St. John and St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands.
Your charter is fully customizable, but most half‑day (and sunset) trips focus on the scenic North Shore—stops like Maho Bay for sea turtles, the quiet sands of Scott Beach, and favorite beaches like Cinnamon Bay, Trunk Bay, and Honeymoon Beach. You’ll snorkel crystal-clear waters, soak up the views, and finish with a stop at Christmas Cove for fresh pizza from Pizza Pi, the famous floating pizzeria.
If you’ve got more time, a full-day charter lets you explore even more. Cruise the South Shore to spots like Salt Pond Bay, Little Lameshur, and Pelican Rock, or head all the way out to Lime Out in Coral Bay, a one-of-a-kind floating taco bar. You’ll have time to snorkel at Waterlemon Cay, check out quiet coves, and see the whole island from the water.

Walk the Leinster Bay Trail to Annaberg Plantation Ruins
One of the most peaceful and scenic walks on the island, the Leinster Bay Trail takes you through lush national park terrain with water views nearly the entire way. At the end of the trail you will find Waterlemon Cay for snorkeling, and just a short detour away are the Annaberg Plantation Ruins, one of the most well-preserved sugar mill ruins in the Caribbean. The views from the overlook at Annaberg are absolutely stunning and the history here is powerful and worth taking in. Give yourself about 20 to 30 minutes to explore the ruins and look out over the bay.
Explore the South Shore
Most visitors stick to the famous North Shore and never make it to the quieter, wilder south side of the island, which means you get to experience something that feels genuinely secret. Salt Pond Bay is the standout, requiring a short 10 to 15 minute hike down a shaded trail to reach the beach. What waits at the bottom is stunning, with excellent snorkeling along the reef, tidepools perfect for kids, and a natural salt pond sitting right behind the beach. There are no facilities so come fully prepared, and plan to stay a while. This beach rewards the people who linger.
Catch Sunset at The Windmill Bar
Perched high above the North Shore with panoramic ocean views, The Windmill Bar is the kind of place that makes you feel like you found something special. Open air setting, live music on select nights, cold drinks, and sunsets that are genuinely unreal. Get there early because the best seats fill up fast and arriving well before sunset makes all the difference. It is more than just a happy hour stop. It is one of those St. John moments you carry home with you.
Rent a Jeep and Get Lost
St. John is not an island you experience from a taxi window. Rent a Jeep, remember that driving is on the LEFT side of the road, and just explore. The steep hills, narrow roads, and hidden pullouts along Centerline Road and the North Shore will reveal overlooks and scenery that no itinerary can fully capture. Some of the best moments on this island happen when you pull over somewhere unexpected and realize you are looking at one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Splurge on Dinner at ZoZo's
Every trip to St. John deserves at least one elevated evening, and ZoZo's is the place for it. Sitting above Cruz Bay with panoramic water views, an Italian-inspired menu built around fresh local ingredients, and a terrace sunset that is completely unmatched, ZoZo's is widely considered one of the best restaurants on the island. Make reservations in advance and dress the occasion up a little. You have earned it.

For our family, it has always been more than a destination. It is the island where our story began, back in 1998 on our honeymoon, and it is the place we will always return to.
If you are ready to plan your trip, our Ultimate Guide to St. John, USVI (Deluxe Edition) has everything you need, including a full 7-day itinerary, where to stay at every budget, where to eat, hidden gem beaches, and our personal contact directory for the best local services on the island.
