When most people start planning a trip to the Bahamas, they quickly realize something confusing.

They keep seeing Eleuthera, Spanish Wells, Russell Island, and Harbour Island mentioned together.

Are they all the same place?

Not exactly.

While these destinations are located just minutes from one another, each offers a completely different vacation experience. Knowing the differences can help you choose the island that fits your travel style and avoid booking accommodations in the wrong place.

After exploring all four ourselves, here's exactly what you need to know.

Understanding the Geography

Think of Eleuthera as the main island.

Off Eleuthera's northern coast sit two smaller islands connected by bridges:

  • Spanish Wells

  • Russell Island

Just a short ferry ride away is another separate island:

  • Harbour Island

Because they're so close together, many visitors explore multiple islands during one trip.

Eleuthera

Eleuthera is a long, narrow island stretching more than 100 miles through the Bahamas. It feels quiet, uncrowded, and wonderfully authentic. Unlike Nassau, you'll find very little commercial development. Instead, you'll discover pink sand beaches, dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and small settlements where life moves at a slower pace.

Best For

  • Road trips

  • Beach lovers

  • Couples

  • Photographers

  • Travelers wanting to escape crowds

Don't Miss

  • Glass Window Bridge

  • Queen's Bath

  • Lighthouse Beach

  • Preacher's Cave

  • Surfer's Beach

  • Sapphire Blue Hole

Eleuthera is also where you'll fly if you're staying in Spanish Wells or visiting Harbour Island.

Spanish Wells

Spanish Wells is one of the most peaceful islands we've ever visited.

This small island is connected to Russell Island by a bridge and is known for crystal clear water, friendly locals, golf carts instead of cars, and an incredibly safe atmosphere.

Unlike many Caribbean destinations, Spanish Wells doesn't revolve around tourism. It's a working fishing community with a laid back island lifestyle that visitors quickly fall in love with.

Life slows down here.

There are no cruise ships.

No high-rise resorts.

No packed beaches.

Just beautiful turquoise water and a welcoming community.

Best For

  • Families

  • Couples

  • Relaxation

  • Boating

  • Fishing

  • Snorkeling

  • Kayaking

What Makes Spanish Wells Special

  • Quiet uncrowded beaches

  • Calm shallow water

  • Golf cart transportation

  • Incredible seafood

  • Friendly local community

  • Easy access to boating adventures

Many visitors say Spanish Wells feels like stepping back in time in the best possible way.

Russell Island

Russell Island is often overlooked because it's directly connected to Spanish Wells.

In fact, many visitors don't even realize they've crossed onto another island.

Russell Island is mostly residential and offers some incredible vacation rental homes with more privacy, larger lots, and beautiful waterfront views.

If you're traveling with a larger family or group, this is one of our favorite places to stay.

Many homes include:

  • Private docks

  • Pools

  • Water views

  • Larger outdoor spaces

  • Easy access to Spanish Wells in just a few minutes by golf cart

You're never far from restaurants, beaches, or shopping, but you enjoy a little more space and privacy.

Harbour Island

Harbour Island offers an entirely different experience.

While it's only about a 10 minute ferry ride from Eleuthera, it has a much more upscale atmosphere.

I

t's famous around the world for its beautiful Pink Sand Beach, luxury boutique hotels, stylish restaurants, designer shops, and colorful Dunmore Town.

You'll still travel primarily by golf cart, but you'll notice a much livelier scene than Spanish Wells.

Best For

  • Luxury travelers

  • Romantic getaways

  • Boutique hotels

  • Food lovers

  • Shopping

  • Instagram-worthy scenery

Harbour Island is certainly more expensive, but many visitors choose to stay in Spanish Wells and spend a day exploring Harbour Island to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Can You Visit All Four?

Absolutely.

One of the best parts about visiting this area is how easy it is to experience multiple islands.

A typical itinerary could look like this:

Stay in Spanish Wells or Russell Island

Then take day trips to:

  • Harbour Island

  • Northern Eleuthera attractions

  • Glass Window Bridge

  • Queen's Bath

  • Preacher's Cave

  • Sapphire Blue Hole

You don't have to choose just one.

Our Recommendation

After visiting all four, Spanish Wells completely stole our hearts.

There's something special about the slower pace, friendly people, uncrowded beaches, and unbelievably clear water. It feels like the Bahamas many travelers imagine but rarely find.

That said, we wouldn't skip Harbour Island or Eleuthera if you have the time. Each destination has its own personality, and together they create one of the most memorable island vacations in the Bahamas.
