Where to Stay in Maui for Every Budget: Our Favorite Areas & Hotels
Updated: Sep 12

Planning a trip to Maui and wondering where to stay without blowing your entire vacation budget on a hotel room?
Maui has everything from smaller condo-style properties to beautiful beachfront resorts where the hotel itself becomes part of the vacation. The key is figuring out where you want to spend your time and where you want to splurge.
We don't believe every part of a trip needs to be luxury. Sometimes we'd rather save on our accommodations and put that money toward a bucket-list experience like a Molokini snorkeling sail or helicopter tour.
Based on the places and areas we recommend in our Ultimate Guide to Maui, here are some of our favorite places to stay in Maui at different price points.
First: What Area of Maui Should You Stay In?
Before choosing a hotel, choose the part of Maui that makes the most sense for your vacation.
For most first-time visitors, we would focus on South Maui or West Maui.
Kīhei: Best for Budget-Friendly Maui Trips
If you're trying to experience Maui without spending resort prices every night, start your search in Kīhei.
Kīhei puts you close to South Maui beaches, restaurants and Wailea while generally giving you more affordable lodging options than neighboring Wailea.
It's also a convenient location for the itinerary in our Maui guide. You'll have relatively easy access to Mākena, Wailea, Upcountry Maui, Haleakalā and the road toward Kahului.
Best for: Couples and families who want to spend more of their budget on experiences rather than their hotel.
Wailea: Best for a Maui Luxury Vacation
If you're coming to Maui to splurge, Wailea is where we'd look first.
This part of South Maui is known for beautiful beaches, upscale resorts, excellent restaurants and the Wailea Beach Walk.
It's especially good for travelers who want their resort to be a major part of the vacation rather than simply somewhere to sleep.
Best for: Anniversaries, milestone trips, honeymoons and travelers ready for a resort splurge.
Kāʻanapali: Best for the Classic Maui Resort Experience
Kāʻanapali gives you the Maui experience many travelers picture before they ever arrive.
You have Kāʻanapali Beach, Black Rock, Whalers Village, snorkeling, restaurants and sunset all concentrated in one area.
It's also one of our favorite areas for a day when you park the car and stop driving.
We built the final day of our 7-day Maui itinerary around Kāʻanapali for exactly that reason.
Beach in the morning, snorkeling at Black Rock, lunch at Hula Grill, Whalers Village, sunset and dinner at Leilani's can all fit together without spending the day driving around the island.
Best for: First-time visitors, families, couples and travelers who like having restaurants and activities within walking distance.
Nāpili & Kahana: Best for a Quieter West Maui Stay
If Kāʻanapali feels a little too resort-heavy, look farther north toward Nāpili and Kahana.
These areas can give you a quieter, more relaxed home base while keeping you close enough to enjoy Kāʻanapali, Kapalua and the rest of West Maui.
Best for: Couples, families and travelers who prefer smaller properties or condo-style accommodations over a huge resort.
Where to Stay in Maui on a Budget
Let's put “budget” into perspective.
Maui budget accommodations are not the same thing as mainland budget accommodations.
A property can be a good value for Maui and still cost considerably more than you might expect in another destination. Rates also vary dramatically by season and travel dates.
These are two places we'd start comparing.
Mahina Surf | Kahana

For travelers who prefer a smaller property over a giant resort, Mahina Surf is worth considering.
Located in Kahana in West Maui, this condo-style property can be especially appealing if you want more of a home-away-from-home feel. We have stayed here twice and can't wait to go back again soon! Each unit is privately owned.
Having a kitchen is also one of our favorite ways to save money in Maui. Pick up groceries after landing at Kahului Airport and handle breakfast, snacks and a few simple meals yourself.
That can free up money for the experiences you're actually coming to Maui to have.
Why we'd consider it: Smaller property, condo-style accommodations and a quieter West Maui location.
Keep in mind: Don't choose Mahina Surf expecting a traditional sprawling beachfront resort experience. Decide which matters more to you: resort amenities or having additional space and the ability to prepare some of your own meals.
Maui Coast Hotel | Kīhei

If you want to stay in South Maui without paying Wailea luxury-resort prices, Maui Coast Hotel is another property from our guide we'd consider.
Kīhei is one of our favorite areas for travelers trying to balance location and budget.
You're close to beaches and restaurants, with Wailea and Mākena just farther south.
Why we'd consider it: A convenient South Maui location that makes it easy to explore Kīhei, Wailea and Mākena.
Best for: Travelers who plan to spend their days exploring rather than staying at their hotel all day.
Mid-Range Places to Stay in Maui
If you want to step up from the budget category without going all the way into Maui's luxury-resort pricing, these are two options from our guide.
Nāpili Kai Beach Resort | Nāpili Bay

Napili is one of the West Maui areas we'd look at if you want something quieter than Kaanapali.
Napili Kai Beach Resort puts you near beautiful Napili Bay and makes a great base for exploring northern West Maui.
This could be a particularly good fit if your Maui vacation is less about a huge resort scene and more about beach time and a slower island feel.
Best for: Couples and families who want to be in West Maui without staying directly in the middle of Kaanapali.
Hilton Vacation Club Ka'anapali Beach Maui | Kāʻanapali

If you want a West Maui stay with more space than a traditional hotel room, Hilton Vacation Club Ka'anapali Beach Maui is a great option to compare.
The all-suite resort sits along the Kāʻanapali coastline and gives you easy access to the beach while offering the extra room that can be especially helpful for families or longer Maui stays.
We like this option for travelers who want to make West Maui their home base while still having a rental car to explore the rest of the island.
It's also a good alternative if you want resort amenities without jumping all the way into the price range of Maui's highest-end luxury resorts.
Best for: Families, couples, and travelers who want a spacious West Maui resort with beach access.
Why we like the location: You're positioned well for Kāʻanapali, Nāpili, and Kapalua while still
having plenty of restaurants and shopping nearby.
Luxury Hotels in Maui Worth the Splurge
This is where Maui knows how to show off.
If the resort itself is part of your vacation experience, Wailea is hard to beat.
Wailea Beach Resort, Marriott, Maui | Wailea

Wailea Beach Resort is one of the luxury properties included in our Maui guide.
The Wailea location puts you near South Maui beaches, restaurants and the Wailea Beach Walk while giving you the amenities you'd expect from a full-service resort.
Best for: Couples and families looking for a luxury resort experience in South Maui.
Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort | Wailea

For travelers looking for a more upscale Maui stay, Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort is another property we'd compare.
This is the kind of hotel we'd consider for an anniversary, adults' getaway or trip where you're intentionally budgeting more for accommodations.
And this is where our travel philosophy matters:
You don't have to splurge on everything.
Maybe you stay somewhere less expensive for most of the trip and upgrade for your final few nights. Or perhaps you use points for flights so there's more room in the budget for the hotel.
There isn't one correct way to do Maui.
Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea | Wailea

If you're looking for the full luxury Maui experience, Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea belongs on the list.
This is absolutely a splurge property.
For some travelers, spending this much on accommodations won't make sense. For others, the resort is the experience and that's exactly where they want their vacation budget to go.
Best for: Luxury vacations, milestone anniversaries, honeymoons and travelers who plan to spend significant time enjoying the resort.
So, Where Would We Stay in Maui?
It depends on the trip.
If keeping costs down is the priority, we'd look at Kīhei or a condo-style property in Kahana.
If we wanted a classic first Maui vacation, we'd seriously consider Kaanapali because so much is right there.
If we wanted a quieter West Maui trip, we'd look around Napili or Kahana.
And if this were a big anniversary or bucket-list splurge, we'd start looking at Wailea.
But here's the part we think matters most:
Don't spend your entire Maui budget on the room unless the resort is one of the main reasons you're going.
Maui has some expensive bucket-list experiences. A Molokini snorkeling sail with Trilogy, a Hāna Rainforest helicopter experience, a lūʻau and a whale-watching excursion during whale season can add up quickly. We would rather strategically save in some areas so we can say yes to the experiences we'll remember long after we've forgotten what our hotel room looked like.
Our Maui Money-Saving Strategy
One of the easiest ways to control the cost of a Maui trip is to decide before booking what you're willing to splurge on.
Maybe that's the resort.
Maybe it's a helicopter tour.
Maybe it's dinner at Mama's Fish House.
Maybe it's a week packed with snorkeling, sailing and exploring while you choose a less expensive place to sleep.
For us, the goal isn't necessarily to make Maui cheap. It's to spend intentionally so we can do more of what matters to us.
